Abstract | .The DETER system - Deforestation Detection in Real Time Deter, was created by INPE in 2004 as an alert system to support surveillance and deforestation control. Both shallow cut and areas in process of deforestation are detected and mapped using MODIS sensor data from Terra satellite, and WFI sensor data from CBERS. Due to the coarse satellites resolution (~250 m) used in DETER, the types of deforestation process cannot be discriminated. Thus, we developed a methodology to evaluate and classify DETER monthly data using as reference medium resolution images (TM/landsat and CCD/Cbers) and field data. We used photointerpretation techniques to classify the deforestation in the image and a decision tree to help defining the deforestation class during the field data analysis. The evaluation system developed makes the evaluation procedures more objective and systematic. The results obtained from DETER evaluation with satellite images, and field data acquired from three field data collections campaign carried out in Pará and Mato Grosso states The results of DETER evaluation indicated that is an efficient system to detect shallow cuts and areas in advanced stage of forest degradation. This alert system is not so efficient to detect early stages of forest degradation and small deforestation areas. |
